Product Biosensor
Y-maze (Y-maze sensing system)
Overview
Y-Maze Sensing System detects any movement pattern of animals in the system. The system then collects other necessary
information and allows user to easily analyze results.
Researchers have been studying movement patterns of animals, such as mice and hamsters, in Y-mazes by manually recording
the data. Y-Maze Sensing System automatically records real-time data of animal's movement pattern. The system also records
other necessary data, which are period of time the animal stays at a certain location, temperature, humidity, and amount of
light corresponding to the location. The system, thus, eliminates the time-consuming job of researchers and provides the user
much more information than the conventional way of studying, yet information that is trustable and easy to analyze.
Product Description

Description |
specification |
Y maze sensing
system |
Features |
▪ Each arm of Y-maze has three sensors built in a way that is not noticeable to the animals
in the system.
▪ By arms having three position sensors each, the system is able to, not only detect the animal’s
choice of arm, but also specific location of the animal in the arm, as well as exact path of the
animal.
▪ The system also records following types of data, corresponding to the location of the animal.
Period of time the animal stays at certain location Temperature (Thermometer range: -40~100℃ , ±0.4℃, Resolution 0.01℃) Humidity (Humidity meter range: 0~100%, ±3%, Resolution 0.05%) Amount of light (Illuminometer range: 1~65535 lx) ▪ Each arm is assigned a color of red, green and yellow, which allows statistical analysis of the animal’s behavior.
▪ The switching hub is capable of connecting up to 10 Y-mazes, which allows analysis of multiple
animals at a time.

What Is Included |
▪ Y-maze, User’s Software, Switching Hub
▪ How They Are Connected
Y-mazes send the animal’s behavioral information and environmental information to the hub.
The hub then sends the information that is distinguishable by each Y-maze to the PC. Finally, the software displays the real-time result and allows the user to save the result if wished. |

How the System
Works |
▪ Each arm has three position sensors installed.
▪ Special installation of sensors are done in the process of building the system, so that none of the
sensors are noticeable to the animals.
▪ Efficient method of display results: Suppose that the animal made a movement pattern of the
blue arrow on the figure above.
▪ The graph on the right hand side of the figure above will be displayed.
Analysis by software : Each Y-mazes has its unique ID assigned. By selecting the ID of specific
Y-maze the user wish to analyze, the user is displayed the real-time location of the animal and
environmental information of the location.
Analysis by built-in LED’s and LCD display on Y-maze :
Each Y-mazes has a set of LED’s and LCD display on the bottom support (red circle indicated on the figure above) that indicates location of the animal and environmental information.
